What is breathwork?

life is breath, breath is life

The breath, is, undeniably a bridge for the mind & body, the spiritual to physical, the intangible to the tangible, & of life & death. It is the window to our wellbeing, & one is only as free as the breath you release. Breathwork is a conscious effort of breath manipulation to facilitate a higher awareness of the Self, deepen meditation, lower anxiety/stress, improve the mental state of awareness, improve physical properties for performance, & to create a deep connection with everything around us. All this, can be done by simple breath manipulation.

Within 5-10 mins of practice session, you will start to:

  • Alkalise your ph blood level
  • Saturate your whole body(cells) with oxygen
  • Improve focus
  • Facilitate the parasympathetic response
  • Improve blood flow
  • Increase energy
  • Breathe better
  • Facilitates healing journey

Those in Singapore, who are in search of breathing session(breathwork) in a yoga class, unfortunately, don’t get much benefits due to the lack of knowledge of the teacher. You should feel physically feel the benefits of a single session of breathing class

Does breathwork help relieve stress?

Breathing practices such as breathwork involves deep & slow breaths, maybe even alternate nostrils breathing sessions, they are known to bring your blood pressure down, improve energy, & allow for deeper relaxation to happen. Breathing is directly connected to our nervous system, as whenever you’re stressed, observe how you breathe, it usually forms a pattern of hyperventilation, & this can become a normal breath which puts your body in a very acidic level(where disease thrives). Breath better & your body will thank you with lesser stress, or at least stress management is better than before.

How often should I do breath work?

breathwork class

Adults breathe at about 12-16 bpm at rest, & about 22,000 breaths in a day If you are exercising, hyperventilating(stressed or personal emotional reasons), this will be higher. It would be wise to say that if we learn to control the breath just a little bit more often, we stay more grounded each session. A weekly/ daily practise is optimal to keep a bit of being aware of your own breath every now & then, & once you master this breath awareness, your life will change completely.

Base Oxygen Level Test

Now, this is a great way to test how fast your body accumulates the build-up of CO2(carbon dioxide) & your tolerance of it. The urge to breathe comes in when CO2 in your body is reeaaally building up, the higher it is, the higher the urge to gasp for air. Now allow yourself to a conscious breath cycle(in & out) two times, after that exhale & hold your breath. Time yourself to see when the first urge of breathing kicks in & stop the watch.

  1. Less than 10 secs
  2. 10-16 seconds
  3. 17-25 seconds
  4. 25-35 seconds
  5. 35 seconds onwards

Well if you haven’t guessed yet, the on ger your breath holds, the better!

What to expect during breathwork workshops/ classes?

Every individual has a personal journey & process that we are going through, some emotional release may happen, with a tear or two slowly running down the cheeks, some may laugh, some may not feel anything, self-discovery is what you can expect from the feeling of being connected in life, & while all these may or may not happen to you, you will definitely have a higher saturation of oxygen, & most probably experience a slightly elevated (feeling light) during & after the session. Bring along a towel to support the back of your head if a yoga mat is not enough comfort for you.
