What is a sports massage?

Sports massage is a form of deep tissue on the body which use a range of techniques to help with various conditions such as recovering from injuries from training/ sports, personal wellness, recovery in between fitness training. Sports massage techniques/ sports massage therapy make the use of fingers, palms, forearms, elbows, & even the knuckles to contact the skin in different goals of the session. Oils & emollient are also common use for sports massage to provide more gliding to help improve blood flow to a general or specific area of interest. Sports massage is considered a form of moderate to deep work which generally aims to help improve recovery between workouts, decrease pain, & improve posture.

Is sports massage painful?

sports massage pain

Ok, fine, have to agree with some clients that have said it’s painful….that’s because there are some(quite a number though) of therapists in Singapore that are still under the no pain no gain mentality, & this is old skool. The beauty of science is that it is always evolving towards a better understanding of our physiology & how we can live better lives, & with that said, the neurological approach is the new practise. You are able to get the same effects for less pressure(pain), & allow for deeper reach on the tissues with less effort!

Though I must say if you are already sore from working out or have an injury that you need to recover faster & looking to have tissue therapy, having a slight discomfort of a “good kind” when techniques are done on to you is normal, but never pain. Pain is a way of saying we can use lesser to heal, that is why you want to find a school/ course that is updated with techniques!

Are sports massage techniques the same as stretch therapy?

stretch therapy

The two systems are definitely not the same in context. Sports massage therapy uses mainly compression, whilst stretch therapy works on manipulation of the fascia by stretching & neuromuscular education. In Singapore, a stretch system such as Functional Stretch Therapy(FST) course covers an 8-week course on human anatomy, orthopaedic assessments, injuries, & pain. All of the massage therapy course in Singapore will teach students techniques to help improve their knowledge on how to manipulate soft tissues, human anatomy, client assessment(eg soft tissue palpation), & of course how to reduce pain.

Sports massage in Singapore takes about 2-3 day of learning as most massage schools offer basic sports massage course, rather than an extended diploma in massage therapy which takes up to 2.5 years of full-time studies in countries outside Singapore like Canada & in the US. Sports massage itself is only a small part(think of it as specialising) of the whole massage learning process which includes:

  • Lymphatic
  • Chair
  • Thai
  • Swedish
  • Etc

All in all, read more on stretch therapy here if you wish to learn how you can incorporate stretching into your practise.

A course that teaches massage therapy programme is mostly weekend, which could be a great help to those participants that have a full-time job & want to keep learning.
